TAPE
Metal tape measures, fishing line, hardware, 2010-2013
dimensions vary
Tape is an immersive installation fabricated out of hundreds of small metal tape measures. Each delicate flimsy metal blade appears from a slight distance to be sprouting out of their individual case which in mass are arranged in various patterns on the gallery floor to form their own unique topographical monolith. Each tape measure is hot glued to the gallery’s floor and attached to the ceiling at various heights by the thinnest of clean plastic fishing line. Taking a
common tool, the ordinary tape measure, invented in England in 1829 and by 2025 the global measuring tape market value will be 1.63 billion dollars, and using it in a unique and
unintended way to elevate it into a thought-provoking installation. The layout of the tape measures is dictated only by the size and height of the space.
The visitor will be able to walk around and through the various structures. The walls are intended to remain empty and act as canvas for the shadow pattern that the monoliths will produce from the various light sources within the space. The ultimate configuration of the installation will be worked out between myself and the gallery staff.
